Slow Lorises—a small group of wide-eyed, nocturnal primates found in the forests of South and Southeast Asia —might look adorable, but think twice before snuggling up to one. The only venomous primate in the world, these creatures pack a bite that can trigger an anaphylactic shock in an adult human and is potentially fatal. Slow Lorises use their venomous bite during territorial disputes, and such bites are a major cause of premature death among captive Slow Loris population in zoos.
The cute, wide-eyed Slow Loris is also a victim of the illegal pet trade. In order to make them more appealing to customers, they usually have their sharp incisors cut or pulled out, an operation that could easily result in death.
